Vero Beach, FL — August 18, 2009 — BATTLESTAR WIKI, the online reference material and episode guide for all of the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA sagas and their spinoffs, will have Shane Froebel represent the website at a BATTLESTAR GALACTICA panel in Brooklyn, New York.

The BATTLESTAR panel, which will be held at the Hi Christina art space in Brooklyn, will be part of a night of BATTLESTAR fun and activities. As part of these activities that include Cylon Arm Wrestling, Gaius Inner-Monologue Karaoke, and “Frak, What’s My Line!?” improv, the BSG panel will be lead by John Brooks. Brooks will be joined with his two special guests, a philosophy/religion teacher from Columbia University and Shane Froebel, the Wiki administrator, editor and IT specialist who oversees the Wiki’s technical assets.

The event begins at 6 PM ET on Sunday, August 30, with the panel beginning at 8 PM ET. The panel will run anywhere between an hour to an hour and a half.

For this event, there is a small cover charge of $5 per person, which goes to support the art house and its worthwhile endeavors.

“We’re very excited to be able to partake in this event,” said Joe Beaudoin Jr., Project Leader of the Battlestar Wiki. “It’s a wonderful feeling to have one of our own hard-working editors and contributors represent the Wiki at a public gathering and retrospective of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. To be able to have Shane attend such an event in a great city like Brooklyn is a testament to the trust and hard work that fans have put into the Wiki, since our launch in February 2005.”

The night will be wrapped up with Sacred Scrolls Trivia and prizes that shall include stogies, eye patches (for the Colonel Tigh in all of us), and more!

Stay tuned to Battlestar Wiki (http://www.battlestarwiki.org), its blog (http://blog.battlestarwiki.org) and its Twitter feed (http://www.twitter.com/battlestarwiki) for information and updates.

Hi Christina is an art gallery and venue located at: 632 Grand Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY. Hi Christina is near the L train at Lorimer. Its official website is: http://www.hichristina.com

We were contacted by a high ranking public relations person from G4 to alert us to a special segment on last night’s episode of Attack of the Show.  Grace Park, who plays Sharon on BSG, stopped by the show for a bit to answer fan mail and questions about Battlestar Galactica.

G4 has been kind enough to allow us to show Grace’s segment to all of you using our blogs, wiki, and forum.  You can view the segment below.  Many thanks to G4 for granting us permission to do this.  Hope you enjoy.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Well.. after hours of tinkering with our new server upgrade, everything is up and running smoothly. As we speak, 8GB of ram is currently running on the server with only half of it being used and we have about 4000 active connections on the server.

I will be continuing to monitor the situation over the next few hours.

The Wiki and other related FrakMedia! websites are experiencing technical issues due to The Planet’s recent modification of its DNS table structure. Therefore, people may have issues submitting edits or even accessing the site.

The issue should clear up in less than 24 hours.

In the meantime, I want to wish everyone a safe and Happy Festivus.

Regards,

Joe Beaudoin Jr.

We are now listed on Wiki1001, a beta version of a website that lists all wiki sites that are available online.

Check it out and cast a vote, if you’d like.

Folks,

After receiving some comments on our off-server Case Orange blog, it appears that there is some sort of issue with some ISPs. Those in Alaska using the Alaska Communications System ISP will be pleased to know that their tech support team is looking into the issue on their end.

Updates as we get them. Thank you.

Yes, we’re on another top ten list, along with Lostpedia, WikiHow, and even Conservapedia (which I personally shudder at, it’s worse than Wikipedia). Interestingly, no Wikia wikis made it on the list, from what I can tell.

MSDN blogger “oldnewthing” noted the existence of Wikis and their spoof sites. Among them are Battlestar Wiki and Wiki Frakr.

To our friends and fans in America, we hope that everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July holiday weekend!

That goes for everyone else too! You don’t need a holiday to have a safe and happy weekend, now do ya?

So say we all!

For those of you questioning why things are slow—for instance, why you’re receiving delayed updates and (for you new users) registration information—here’s why.

We have been visited by between 20k-30k people on both Saturday and Sunday. At least the Wiki has. The Forum has definitely increased in activity, and our IRC chat on Friday night (which started at 9 P.M. ET, went well into 2 AM ET on Saturday morning!).

Just to give you an idea of how this compares, the weekend of the Season 4 premiere (”[[He That Believeth In Me]]”) saw 20k unique visitors come to the Battlestar Wiki. Now, the mid-season finale, “[[Revelations]]”, actually saw an increase in on those numbers. The difference, according to Quantcast (which directly measures visits), being about 1 to 2 thousand additional viewers.

The chart below, which you can see for yourself here, is reproduced below since I don’t want to be embarrassed a year from now when the chart gets updated and the old data pushed aside. The peaks, as you can imagine, correlate to when the episode was aired in the USA. (As you can see, the trough was Memorial Day weekend.)

Now remember when I said “30k”? Well, having recently loaded Google Analytics code into the Wiki’s template (the gizmo that generates the look of the website, otherwise known as the “front end”), they claim we have received 30k visitors. A difference of 10k from Quantcast.

I can’t compare HTBIM to Revelations traffic here, since the Google Analytics code was loaded just a week and a half ago, but here’s the chart from the “Revelations” weekend. (The popup denotes the Saturday following “Revelations”.)

So, “[[The Hub]]” aired and all hell broke use.

As I write this, the wiki’s down because some index files for the database were corrupted.

Don’t worry, the data is still good, but the index files are in the laborious, painstaking process of being rebuilt. Plus we have yesterday’s backups in the event they can’t be repaired. At best, we’ll lose some talk pages and minor edits.

So that’s where we’re at right now. Shane is working on supervising the rebuilding of the database indexes. Only the wikis were affected; the forum and anything not related to MediaWiki is working like a charm.

Updates as we have ‘em. :)
