So we have 24 hours left of Battlestar Galactica to look forward to.

So say we all!

UPDATE! [[David Eick]] posted an update to the show’s fate on SciFi Wire!

“I promise you that when [executiuve producer] Ron [Moore] and I make a decision about Galactica’s future, we’ll let you know.”

well well, wasnt expecting that. I was hoping for a 5th season. But then id rather have 24 hours of quality than two seasons with loads of filler.

“For those of you who have been paying attention over the years, this is not the first time Eddie has made an announcement about the possibility of the show’s end,” chuckled Eick. “I promise you that when [executiuve producer] Ron [Moore] and I make a decision about Galactica’s future, we’ll let you know.”

Not really denied, either… Eick’s comments, in my view, are very… well… non-committal either way.

The fact that Sackhoff confirmed it as well only adds to the confusion.

This only seems to suggest, that if there is a Season 5, it will actually be a Season 1 of a followup series. Something like “Deep Space Earth” if you will… The Galactica just might be destroyed at the end of Season 4, along with EJO and Starbuck, and any other “no longer affordable/no longer part of the Search story”… with continuing characters in a followup series focused on… okay, we found Earth, what now?

That renders everyone’s comments rational. BSG ends, something else begins. Or as one joker said elsewhere: maybe Moore can re-imagine Galactica 1980…. as what it could have been… Earth 21980 AD. The remnants of the original homeworld, the thirteenth tribe, and the remainder of the people of the RTF… three groups, striving to rebuild Earth, and then take on the Cylons and return to the Colonies someday.

It also reminds me how “Babylon 5″ was treated. The series creator thought that season 4 would be it, and so wrapped up the adventure with an episode that showed the space station’s end and John Sheridan’s fate. But TNT, which bought airing rights, renewed for a 5th season, and B5 created a smaller episode that depicted the future of humanity after B5’s adventures, one million years later.

Trust me, BSG has a bright future in made-for-TV movies, maybe even a theatrical release. And how about the idea of a SFX-remastered Original Series (a la the very cool remastered Star Trek original episodes) or even a continuation of TOS Galactica? You never know.

There is still a big following of people interested in making a continuation series. I’m sure I read an interview with Tom DeSanto who didn’t want to rule it out.

A little secret… Depending on the success of the Transformers movie, people may be more favorable to him tackling other big name projects. It just so happens that he loves the original BSG…

You know what I think. I think that it is time to end it. I wanna know how it ends and i hope they make this last season the best. Its better they end it on a boom then have to end it abrubtley when their budget gets cut back. Rembere the x file or that 70’s show. No boom. Not good. Tell the people what they want to know. Do they find earth, whos the final cylon, and what happens to the cylons.

I´ve see this with very mixed feelings… BSG has not waste any time to became my most loved TV Show… even Firefly and Babylon 5 can´t compete. So I hate the idea that they simply walk at the end of the 4th season. I do rather like the idea of a following-up series… like: okay, they find earth, but it is destroyed or devasteyted and so it can´t longer support human live. But i must admit, I don´t want to see the sometime in the future innevedible downfall of the show, so that they must end it unplanned and unsatisfing for the fans… In the end all we can do is wait waht RDM and all the other VERY talented people offer us… I´m sure it will be great!!! (sorry for all the spelling errors, not my mother tougne)

I think that they should have a 5th series as series 4 wound detail life on Earth; and i think that it would be good if the Galactica finds the Cylon homeworld and destroys it so others cannot follow the series with cheap immotators like the 1980s series

I wouldn’t be adverse to a spinoff series once BSG ends, since it’s been established that there’s an eternal return motif established — “This has happened before, this will happen again” — in the series.

That said, there’s still a lot about Cylon society that hasn’t been revealed yet, nor have they really dug in on what the Colonials did to the Cylons to deserve such hate, which I personally find to be a wellspring of dramatic stories.

Big fan of the Wiki, keep it up. I wondered if you’d be willing to get behind the Facebook group I’ve set up to show support for a fifth BSG series.

    http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2355764816&ref=nf

That’s the only purpose of the group – get as many members as poss to show how strong the feeling is.

I’ve started with close friends, promoted the group on my own site at mansized.co.uk and would really welcome your help.

I hope you don’t think this is a dumb idea. Apologies if so. There’s very little on UK television worth watching!

Hi Will! Thank you for your enthusiasm and comments.

However, Battlestar Wiki doesn’t take official positions on fan campaigns, unless the community sees fit to have an official position for or against them.

We’d be happy to consider linking to your Facebook group, but as for supporting it, again, that’s up to the community — and, honestly, outside the scope of what we’re trying to achieve here.

Now I’ll speak as as “Joe the fan”… On a personal level, I respect the wishes of the producers and creator. It’s a creative decision to end the show at the fourth season, and it’s one I happen to agree with. There are too many shows that run on for far too long (Stargate SG-1) or are killed before the story ends (Firefly, Farscape, Odyssey 5); to have a show end on its own merits is a blessing unto itself, in my view. Few shows get that chance, and I’d rather see the story end while still being the top dog, than being a dog whimpering around waiting to be put out of its misery.

I have to agree with both points. I am in the military, and when I was in the middle east the best part of my Monday afternoon was the downloading of the latest episode of season 3, so I am definitely going to be disappointed when season 4 ends, no matter how well the story is wrapped up. HOWEVER, I don’t want to see my favorite show turn into a paycheck and nothing more for the cast and crew. Right now they appear to love what they are doing, and if it gets dragged out too long, they’ll just be going through the motions.

Whatever the fans may want, sometimes you gotta do like the old saying “Always leave ‘em wanting more” Besides, maybe there will be another miniseries in the offing, or… dare I say it… a…MOVIE!
